1. Client background
Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. (PSMC)
As one of the world’s top ten semiconductor foundries, PSMC is not only a key manufacturing partner for numerous IC distributors and technology companies, but also provides foundry services for major LCD panel manufacturers. Throughout the semiconductor supply chain, PSMC plays a vital and indispensable role with its stable process technologies and large-scale production capabilities.
2. Challenge
In the manufacturing process of semiconductor wafers, it’s necessary to use ultrapure water to rinse away contaminants from the wafers.
The wastewater generated from the manufacturing process also needs to pass through multiple filtration systems before being discharged from the factory. Therefore, periodic replacement of filter cartridges has become an essential part of quality control. Differential pressure gauges help operators evaluate the cleanliness of the filter cartridges. When the pressure difference between the two ends exceeds a certain value, it indicates that the filter cartridge is clogged and needs to be replaced immediately.
After years of use, the differential pressure gauge must be repaired and maintained more frequently. Since the warranty period had already expired, and waiting for the original manufacturer to make repairs took too long, PSMC decided to seek another supplier.
3. Client demand
- To ensure the best production quality, the customer needed a differential pressure gauge to measure whether the filter cartridge needs to be replaced.
- The customer expects that when the differential pressure value exceeds the preset range, the switch will turn on and will trigger the alarm automatically to notify operators.
- When the pressure sources of both ends are connected, the differential pressure value may be unstable initially. The customer needed to install a protective device to avoid instrument damage from excessive differential pressure values.
4. Solutions and client feedback
SJ Gauge’s PRBD Bellows Differential Pressure Gauge utilizes internal sensing elements to accurately measure the pressure difference between two points, helping customers precisely monitor filter conditions and maintain optimal production quality and system performance.
To help reduce manual monitoring costs, SJ Gauge also offers optional electrical contact functions. When the differential pressure exceeds the preset threshold, the electrical contact automatically activates external buzzers or alarm systems, reminding operators to replace the filter element promptly and ensuring stable system operation.
In addition, to protect differential pressure instruments from damage caused by overpressure conditions, SJ Gauge provides the PRA-VS Gauge Valve Manifold as a complete protection solution. The manifold system includes shut-off valves and equalizing (compensation) valves:
- The shut-off valve isolates the differential pressure gauge from the process medium, allowing maintenance or removal while the system remains in operation.
- The equalizing (compensation) valve balances pressure on both sides to prevent damage caused by sudden overpressure conditions.
SJ Gauge also offers optional five-valve manifold configurations equipped with vent/drain (cleaning) valves, which can be used for pressure release or instrument cleaning, further improving maintenance convenience and operational safety.
